Joe McCarthy: Isn't It Time To Tell The Truth?

The CIA released documents on The Pond, the group that gave Joe the second list he had and their confession of bringing him down. Yet no media outlet will cover the story!

It is the biggest lie of all the lies told about Joe McCarthy. Did he while in Wheeling say there were 205 spies in the State Department? It has been ridiculed in films such as THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. It is taught as fact in colleges everywhere. In January of 1952, the Gillette Committee called in Frank Desmond the journalist who reported the 205 figure and swore him in under oath. There was already a problem- not one other reporter had reported that or any other figure. Wouldn't that have made headlines if Joe had said it? Desmond faced jail if he perjured himself. He stated that Joe never stated a number. How many newspapers reported this? None. The kicker? The "journalist" wasn't even at the speech!

As Millard Tydings turned to the press, an aid brought out a record player and album. Holding the album up to the press he declared McCarthy's days of smearing innocent people were over. In his hands was a recording that proved McCarthy had lied when he said he mentioned no numbers in his Wheeling speech. The press went crazy. Over the next few days Tydings holding the album in the air would dominate the front page. The shadow cast by this event exists to this day.

Odd that he didn't actually play the album, isn't it? There was a reason he didn't. Lucky for him no one in the press asked to hear it.

Because it would have been a record of music.

The Senate, conservatives everywhere turned on McCarthy. But wait you say- a fake record? Am I saying McCarthy's enemies engaged in what they accused him of doing? Yes. That is what I'm saying.

But the damage had been done.

It would take a libel suit between McCarthy and Senator William Benton of Connecticut for the truth to come out. Under oath, facing perjury if he lied, Tydings was ordered to produce the record- a recording made of McCarthy declaring a number for the Communist spies within the State Department in Wheeling.

Tydings admitted under oath no such recording existed.

So how many publications printed this retraction?

Almost none.

The CIA was terrified. With every charge McCarthy made about inaction on spies within the government he came closer to confronting them. They knew if McCarthy discovered they had hidden National Socialists, Nazi's, in our country after World War 2 their organization would end almost before it started.

McCarthy had made it clear he would hold hearings on the Army, CIA and then the White House. The Democrats protecting Soviet spies was bad enough. In 1950's America discovering CIA had placed nazi's who had been in charge of the holocaust in our country after giving them passports, jobs and money would have destroyed CIA. The Soviets could have called for another Nuremberg trial.

Tydings held hearings on Joe. Odd that the footage is never shown anymore, isn’t it? Never mentioned in attack articles. Never discussed in schools and universities.

Democrats and Republicans fought to hold the hearings, finally Southern segregationist and anti-semite (he also didn't think much of McCarthy's Catholicism) Senator Millard Tydings was put in charge. He had been instrumental in keeping Republicans from making lynching a Federal crime and was a supporter of the State Department.

The first person called by the Tydings group was Senator Joe McCarthy. The way hearings have been conducted before and since are pretty simple. The person called makes a statement, then the Senators respond and ask questions. Not this time.

Imitating the trials of Stalin with dissidents Tydings and the Democrats openly mocked McCarthy. They spoke over him. they made comments to the press. Over 100 times, in footage no longer shown to the American public, they joked and bullied and attacked him.

Republican Senator Lodge asked that McCarthy be allowed to make his statement, he was hooted down.

Tydings told McCarthy he would be investigated like no one in the history of the United States. In 1947 a list of communists within the State Department had circulated called the Lee list. Tydings and the Democrats were ready. But over the next four days they began to lose control of the hearings. McCarthy in footage no longer shown to the American public, began to use the names from the Pond's list.

Tydings panicked. When McCarthy gave a name of someone who was operating in a group known to recruit spies Tydings would read the names of every single person in the group into the record. It is called filibustering. Ratings on TV slumped, hours were spent trying to keep McCarthy from continuing with names of spies they didn't know.

The Pond's names had come from one of the heads of the KGB.

Which brings us to who created the false reality we have today about Joe? The photo above is Michael Whitney Straight.

Recruited as a Soviet spy in the 1930's while in college in England, Michael Straight would write what has been described the "definitive" book on McCarthy, he was a consultant for a heavily edited film about McCarthy and he would publish THE NEW REPUBLIC which popularized the terms "red scare", "McCarthy era", etc. That's right, a Soviet spy created the language and false stories that now almost every American believes as fact. Add to this 15 CIA agents on the payroll at the New York Times repeating The New Republic charges, and those stories being spread worldwide, and you have the "McCarthy era". It was not discovered Straight was a spy until the 1970's!

It gets better- or worse. He was a speechwriter for FDR! A Soviet agent was writing some of FDR’s speeches!

All the spies were connected internationally in a very real conspiracy. Kim Philby was the head of a Communist spy ring and was also the liason between U.S. and British Intelligence. Every time a Russian tried to give us information, Philby turned his name in to the Russians to be killed. For this reason, John Grombach and later Joe McCarthy would not reveal their source for the names of spies in our government.

Soviet spy Donald Maclean was the second secretary of the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. and had full access to our atomic plans and tests. There was a spy ring within the Treasury Department headed by Nathan Silvermaster that copied confidential reports and gave them to Soviet agents. Harry White was a member of that spy ring.

The State Department had lost a conservative anti- Communist over the Amerasia Affair who was forced out by reporters who called Joe "paranoid", etc. for saying there was a spy ring in our government. He was replaced by Dean Achison whose image in history books is that of a Cold War Warrior. More Democratic Party nonsense, it turns out.

In fact, Achison pushed for a reconcilliation with Russia, downplaying the broken promise Stalin had made that he would allow free elections in European nations his troops occupied. His right hand man would do grave harm to this country for decades to this day. He would push for the U.N. to be placed here for the purpose of chastising America on its own soil, and would be instrumental in turning over 250 million people over to Stalin at the end of World War 2. His name, was Alger Hiss.

Above I asked why would CIA spread false stories about McCarthy? It is interesting to note that the CIA does not call the 1950's "the Red scare", "McCarthy era", etc. It is called THE CIA VS JOE McCARTHY.

Straight becomes the publisher of THE NEW REPUBLIC where I traced every single lie about Joe. Then he takes over the National Endowment of the Arts and funds anti- McCarthy “art” like the propaganda piece, POINT OF ORDER.
The CIA and FBI made a horrendous mistake- they allowed a KGB agent to create the smears on Joe giving Russia inroads into our press, history, media and colleges.

Well folks, here’s the CIA declassified article on The Pond. Believe it or not, the story isn’t really about Joe. The true story is about The Pond, the group that gave Joe the second list of names the public was never told of. Joe doesn’t even come into the story until 2/3 of the way through. The author goes from questioning using a group like The Pond to the end when they admit they are changing their mind. From the very beginning, CIA has broken the original charter to not get involved in domestic politics.
